Death of a Child Death of a Child

Whether your family was prepared for the possibility of your child's death or whether this was an unexpected, sudden loss, the unthinkable has happened! Your beautiful, precious child has died.

In the early days after your child dies, you may experience the following.
  • You may feel as if you are in a dream or in a fog
  • Simple things don't make sense anymore
  • You can't concentrate or make decisions.
  • You just feel overwhelmed and unable to do anything.
  • Other people may not want to talk about the loss.
You may have other puzzling experiences after the death of a child. You may have actually seen your child or heard their voice or cry after the child died. While for a short time this can be a hopeful experience, it may also be frightening. You may wonder if you are losing your mind. This is a common situation and will pass with time.

When you are grieving there is a strong feeling to want to be alone. This may even mean that you do not want to be around other close family members or friends. As time passes, it is important to reach out to those who are close to share stories or plans for the future you had about the child who has died. This is part of your healing.
